Wildfires and the Cost of a Sprinkler Tank

Wildfires are raging around the country. The heatwave has put fire safety back in focus. Residents near moors and other open areas have been evacuated as extreme weather causes a hazard. It may have prompted you to think about improving fire safety. You may own or manage a high-rise building. You may run a property occupied by the vulnerable. The cost of a sprinkler tank may have crossed your mind, if this is.

Many people planning to invest in automatic sprinkler systems wonder about the cost of a sprinkler tank. In fact, this is a very affordable element of fire safety. The exact cost of a sprinkler tank depends on its shape, size and the material it is made from. The modern sprinkler tank is made to fit its environment. That means each one is unique.

Four Building Types That Need A Fire Tank

If you are a regular visitor to our blog, you will know that we focus on fire safety issues. Over the past year, fire safety equipment has been in demand. Building owners are heeding the public’s concerns over safety. In today’s blog post, we will be looking at the four building types that need a fire tank.

If you are wondering what a fire tank is, we will explain. Also known as a sprinkler tank, it stores water solely to fight fires. Water is ready to fight a blaze in an emergency. The fire tank releases water to sprinkler heads. In the case of modern automatic sprinklers, only the area affected by fire will receive the water.

Here are the top four building types that need a fire tank…

1. High-rise tower blocks

While the installation of a sprinkler system is currently not compulsory, it soon could be. Recommendations following the catastrophic fire at Grenfell Tower include sprinklers for new buildings over 18 metres. It could be that existing buildings will have to be retro-fitted with sprinklers. If you own a high-rise building, don’t wait for the law to change. Think about installing a fire tank and automatic sprinkler system now.

2. Care homes

Elderly people are among the most vulnerable in society. Care homes could one day be forced to have sprinkler systems. That is because mobility problems make it difficult for older people to evacuate a building quickly. A fire tank supplies water to sprinklers, giving care homes more time to get residents out of a burning building.

3. New schools

There is growing consensus that all new schools should be fitted with sprinkler systems and fire tanks. This is to reduce the cost of arson and accidental fires on the public purse, and to improve the safety of children.

4. Warehousing

Loss prevention measures should include a fire tank and sprinklers.

Sprinkler Tanks Part of IQE Investment

Welsh technology company IQE, considered a market leader in the field of compound semi-conductors, is to invest £38 million in a new site. Plans for the ambitious project have been given recommended approval by local councillors. New sprinklers tanks will form part of the development and ensure the site has water on standby to fight a fire around the clock.

Other plans for the site include the provision of staff and visitor car and cycle parking, an external plant compound, refrigeration units, external alterations to an existing building and the creation of a new access route.

IQE CS Cluster Project

IQE wants to develop the site as Phase 2 of the CS Cluster Project. The overall aim is to deliver a hub of high-quality facilities for research, development, education and manufacturing. Newport City Council’s Planning committee had access to a feasibility report that said: “The applicant has stated that the precise number of jobs to be created by the occupation of the building is as yet unknown.

“The first phase of development is expected to deliver a total of 60 jobs although these numbers could increase significantly through these current proposals. The onward occupation of the building by IQE and future ambitions for an additional organisation to develop a hub within the building could result in up to 650 members of staff.

“The proposed development is considered to be acceptable and is in accordance with the Newport Local Development Plan. It is recommended that planning permission is granted with conditions.”

Fire safety

IQE has demonstrated its commitment to fire safety by including sprinkler tanks in its plans. As well as providing a ready source of water to fight fires, automatic sprinkler systems provide excellent loss prevention and some insurance benefits.

Shopping Centre Saved by Automatic Sprinklers

A fire in a shopping centre has been contained – thanks to automatic sprinklers. The incident, in Kingston, London, happened as a result of an electrical fault. London Fire Brigade said the automatic sprinkler system stopped the fire from spreading and reduced damage.

Firefighters received 999 calls to the Bentall Centre at 11.11pm on May 31. It is reported that security guards were alerted when they heard smoke detectors go off. Had the building not benefited from automatic sprinklers, the fire could have easily spread and caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Fire brigade praises automatic sprinklers

Fire crews from Kingston and nearby Surbiton stations attended the incident. It was reported to be under control by 1am on June 1.

Speaking to the local press, a London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “This fire highlights the clear benefits of sprinklers to businesses and we would urge all companies and business owners to install them. It is a common misconception that in the event of a fire all sprinklers go off. In this case, only one sprinkler activated to control the fire spread and limit fire damage.”

Shopping centre unit had sprinklers

The shop affected by the blaze was fitted with automatic sprinklers. As pointed out by the fire brigade, just one sprinkler head was activated. It helped contain the blaze and stopped it from spreading to the wider shopping centre.

The Future of Fire Safety: Legislation Will Be Key

With so much talk about fire safety and the need to increase standards, what does the future hold? While the Government has yet to respond to Dame Judith Hackitt’s recommendations, experts are in no doubt. They believe the time has come to force some building owners to invest in life-saving fire safety equipment that does more than just tick a few boxes.

At Nationwide Water Solutions Limited, we have followed the developments of the Hackitt review very closely. In the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, it was obvious that more needed to be done to protect the vulnerable and those living in high-rise tower blocks. While the Government has made no decisions over future legislation, fire safety experts are clear.

What fire safety experts want

While fire safety experts have welcomed Dame Judith Hackitt’s recommendations, they fear only legislation will ensure measures set out in her report come to fruition. With the Government consumed with Brexit negotiations, time is not on safety’s side.

The general consensus among experts is that:

  • Flammable exterior cladding, like that fitted to Grenfell Tower, should be completely banned
  • All new buildings above 18 metres should be fitted with automatic sprinklers
  • Existing buildings that house the vulnerable, including care homes, should be fitted with automatic sprinkler systems
  • Fire doors and building maintenance need greater consideration

What the public want

The tragic loss of 72 innocent lives has left the public in no doubt. A vast majority now feel legislation is needed to force building owners to provide fire safety equipment fit for the 21st Century. As well as feeling the pain of those bereaved by the devastating fire, they do not want to see a repetition. Many people feel it is only a matter of time before more people die because of safety failings.

In the end, politicians answer to the people. Voters expect their voices to be heard and fire safety is an issue that is very unlikely to go away during the term of the current Government.
