As police in Northumberland issued images of an arsonist who unwittingly set himself on fire, a fire tank expert was warning businesses not to be complacent when it comes to fire safety. The arsonist was caught on camera torching a workshop in Gateshead earlier this month. Footage shared by police shows his hands and clothes on fire.
A police spokesman said the fire is being treated as ‘malicious arson’. The workshop was on a farm and the culprit, who has yet to be identified, could be seen pouring a flammable substance on a door. He then became a human fireball. Police say they are certain the man would have suffered serious burns in the incident and have issued an appeal in a bid to locate him.
The rise of malicious arson attacks
Businesses, in particular, need to be aware of the dangers posed by malicious arson attacks. A spokesman for fire tank specialists Nationwide Water Solutions said: “This type of crime is on the rise and can prove very costly, as well as dangerous. Businesses that store large amounts of goods or who count machinery as assets should protect them, their building and people’s lives with automatic sprinkler systems.”
The spokesman added: “Industrial and commercial premises, particularly those on more than one level, should also invest in a fire tank. This will ensure that water is ready to fight an arson attack almost immediately. It is fortunate that, in the Gateshead incident, nobody else was injured. The fact is that many arson attacks take place at night when few people are around to raise the alarm quickly. Having the right equipment on standby will ensure that no time is lost in containing a fire.”

Sprinkler tank installation makes sense in high-risk, vulnerable buildings. This blog post is being written as firefighters damp down following a fire at a UK mental health facility. Any building that presents a heightened risk of arson should benefit from an automatic sprinkler system and a sprinkler tank.
For exceptional sprinkler tank installation services, check out what is on offer from Nationwide Water Solutions. It works with care facilities, hostels, prisons and schools to deliver bespoke fire safety equipment designed to save lives and protect properties. A spokesman said: “Because a man has been detained by police, we cannot comment on the most recent fire. However, vulnerable buildings, particularly those housing challenging individuals, need the very best fire safety equipment.”
Combating arson with sprinkler tank installation
Some buildings are at a greater risk of fire. They include schools during holidays, care facilities housing those who are more likely to commit arson, older properties and those in densely populated areas. They are aso recommended for properties spread over multiple levels and in situations where low water pressure is an issue. A sprinkler tank ensures automatic sprinklers have enough water to effectively tackle a fire immediately. This prevents a blaze from spreading, limits damage and, importantly, gives occupants enough time to safely evacuate the building.
Sprinkler tank installation is made easy with Nationwide Water Solutions. It provides anybody thinking about investing in a sprinkler tank with a free site survey. For those who already have a sprinkler tank, it delivers independent inspections using ROV under water survey technology. A spokesman said: “Our site surveys offer a detailed look at your site and what type of sprinkler tank is required and for what location.”

The single biggest cause of fires in the UK is arson. This shocking fact is backed up by compelling statistics. Sprinkler tank specialist Nationwide Water Solutions says businesses and homeowners need to do more to combat arson. The cost of arson on commercial and residential premises in England and Wales hit £1.2 billion in 2015.
A spokesman for Nationwide Water Solutions said: “Figures released by the Association of British Insurers shows that the average claim for a commercial fire was £25,544 in 2015 – a rise of 165.4 per cent in just over a decade. At the same time, the cost of domestic fires rose by 205.8 per cent.”
Sprinkler tank specialist outlines risks
The spokesman said official figures show that 21,961 arson attacks were reported in England and Wales during the same year. The crimes resulted in just 1,242 successful prosecutions. Forty-seven per cent of all fires attended by the emergency services were deliberately started.
“We urge businesses, landlords and homeowners to consider arson a real risk. During 2015, 47 people died after fires were started deliberately. That is a shocking figure. More needs to be done to ensure the integrity of fire-fighting equipment.”
The sprinkler tank specialist says robust fire safety measures are needed to preserve life and limit losses. It is reminding property owners about the benefits of installing sprinklers and water storage equipment. Sprinklers help to contain fires, giving occupants of a building more time to escape.

Do you own an unoccupied property? You may be wondering why you need sprinkler tank advice, if you are. The fact is, vacant buildings are prone to arson attacks. What’s more, with nobody on site, a fire can take longer to discover.
Protecting your asset makes sense, particularly if a building is the subject of development plans or is likely to be put back into use. Arson attacks present an ever-present threat. Don’t forget, a fire started deliberately more than a week ago is still burning on Saddleworth Moor. But buildings, as well as open land, have been the subject of arson attacks in the past week.
A sprinkler tank makes sense for empty properties
A disused building in the Somerset town of Glastonbury was targeted by an arsonist earlier this week. As is quite common in these types of incidents, the fire was started in a doorway. It was reported to the emergency services at 6.55am on Wednesday.
Nationwide Water Solutions is the UK’s leading independent sprinkler tank specialist. A spokesman said: “Empty buildings are known target for arsonists. If you own a building you want to preserve, it pays to invest in automatic sprinklers connected to a sprinkler tank. That is because it is like having your own private firefighting crew on call every day, around the clock.”
Other reasons to consider a sprinkler tank
If your property is located next to or near an empty building, double-check your fire safety processes. Ensure they are robust enough to cope with a fire that has spread from another building.
Nationwide Water Solutions says: “Your fire assessments should consider external risks. When you weight up the likelihood of arson on an empty nearby property, consider the potential impact on your building.”
